The Room Next Door is renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature. It may not be in Spanish but he has included all of his acclaimed directorial flourishes: heartbreaking choices, visuals saturated with color, and the precise rendering of women’s inner lives.
Ingrid (Oscar winner Julianne Moore) and Martha (Oscar winner Tilda Swinton) were close friends in their youth when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and the circumstances of life separated them. After years of being out of touch, they meet again reigniting a friendship from years past.
