THE MARCHING BAND

August, 11 2026 | 7:00 PM | The Sebastiani Theatre

Celebrated at its Cannes Film Festival premiere and winner of the Audience Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival, The Marching Band is the kind of big-hearted, deeply satisfying French crowd-pleaser that reminds us why international cinema belongs on the big screen.

Directed by Emmanuel Courcol, whose previous film The Big Hit charmed audiences around the world, The Marching Band follows Thibaut, an internationally renowned orchestra conductor whose life is upended when a health crisis leads him to discover that he was adopted — and that he has a younger brother, Jimmy, a cafeteria worker and trombone player in a local marching band in northern France. The two men appear to come from completely different worlds, but they soon discover a shared connection through music, family, and the possibility of a life neither one expected.

Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, The Marching Band went on to become one of France’s major audience hits and awards-season success stories. The film received seven César Award nominations, including Best Film, Best Actor for Benjamin Lavernhe, Best Supporting Actress for Sarah Suco, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing. It also won the City of Donostia Audience Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best Feature at The American French Film Festival in Los Angeles.

Critics have embraced the film’s warmth, humor, and emotional generosity. Cineuropa called it “a French feel-good story” filled with “music, laughter and tears,” while The Upcoming compared it to the beloved British classic Brassed Off, writing that it is “every bit as good.” Next Best Picture praised it as “an excellent depiction of talent and community,” and Le Monde celebrated the film as a moving blend of art-house and popular cinema that “does a world of good for morale.”

At once funny, moving, musical, and human, The Marching Band is a film about second chances, unexpected family, social divides, and the power of music to bring people together.

It is exactly the kind of discovery SIFF’s Awards Buzz Screenings were created to champion: an acclaimed international festival favorite with heart, craft, and broad audience appeal.
