"It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood". (Fred Rogers)
ST. ELMO'S FIRE screenwriter Carl Kurlander gave up a successful career in Hollywood, the ultimate Land of Make Believe, to search for a more meaningful existence with his wife and young daughter in his hometown of Pittsburgh. Carl discovered that Pittsburgh was experiencing its own mid-life crisis - its favorite neighbor, TV's beloved "Mr. Rogers", passed away, and the city itself was facing bankruptcy. Carl pursues his neighbors - going shopping with Teresa Heinz Kerry, tossing a football with Steelers legend Franco Harris, and eating breakfast at a local diner with Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill - asking each what will save their hometown? But in trying to address Pittsburgh's future, Carl also finds he has to deal with his own past.
