Ariel Dorfman, author, poet and dramatist, was Minister of Culture in Salvador Allende's Chilean government. The 1973 right-wing coup left Allende dead and Dorfman (a native of both North and South America) with material for his life's work: the legacy of Pinochet's iron-fisted rule, the "disappeared" who dared resist, and the vast harm done to the collective psyche of his adopted homeland. Documentarian Peter Raymont follows Dorfman on his return to Chile after years of exile, enlisting the writer as an on-camera host guiding us through the streets of Santiago, the thrilling memories of a revolutionary moment, the terrors of the coup, and hopes for the future.
